It wasn't everyday that Shane's boss approached him and asked if he wanted to go to a conference. So when one day he did, Shane jumped at the chance to get out of Star City. True, he travelled everywhere as Ragnarok, but when in mufti he rarely strayed out of a set routine. A little R&R from the endless cycle of managing the rapidly-growing grocery store was in order. Hey, perhaps even he could leave his hero uniform back at the house and take a break from that, too. Instead of looking for someone to shadow among the skyscrapers he could relax in the hotel hot tub until one in the morning. Unwind his perpetually-tense legs, back, and shoulders. Perhaps he would even meet someone, guy or girl, who would complete him like Greg had.
However, now that he was here, the hotel's hot tub wasn't open at night, and the others at the Manage Grocery Smart conference were cold toward him at best, he was really glad that he had brought the suit. It was stashed nicely away in his messenger bag, ready to be changed into at any moment. This was turning out to be a disappointing week. Shane had a feeling that no matter how much he tried to resist the temptation, Ragnarok sooner or later was going to make an appearance on the streets of Metropolis. Well, one thing for sure, that time wasn't now. Mr. Rourke had from twelve to three to do whatever he pleased for lunch before having to go back to the conference hall for another long round of pep talks- how to be more ergonomic, motivating your employees, etc etc. Around one he had gotten hungry, so he ducked into a Chipotle in Metropolis's old district and grabbed a big bite to eat. Now his belly was full (perhaps a bit too full), and all he wanted to do was go back to the hotel room and take a nap. There was so much to see around the city, though! Towers of silver, statues and parks everywhere- Shane was dazzled. Everything seemed to be in much better condition than in Star City. Even the poorer neighborhoods seemed to have a little more life in them. This must be the reason that the word metropolis had come to mean a city, modern and looking to the future. There was a cool breeze, too, which made the prospect of taking a self-guided tour even more inviting. He passed the Daily Planet building, just as grand a structure as the others except for the giant golden globe on top. He found himself doubling back to get a better look at it from across the street. In between parked cars, he stood and admired the seemingly-spotless gold logo shine from above. Greg had shown it to him a couple times, once from a private plane, but the sight never got old.

It had been a few months since the girl had came to earth and even got her job of being a model for one of the biggest magazines of the time. That was why the girl was in the big city. Normally she would find herself in New Coast City where she was living in an apartment but her boss seemed that it was important for her to travel around and take photos. The girl was glad to be in Metropolis because she knew much about the heroes who called Metropolis home. Today she was taking pictures for a new clothing line that came out, it was quite the fun time. Though as the clock ticked noon she smiled. "Alright guys, I need some food. How about we meet back up around three, that way everyone can do something for a while." The girl used her smile that made mostly everyone think she was the most adorable innocent person she was. Everyone agreed and she changed out of the outfit she didnt like to much and in to a new one the designer allowed her to keep. The girl strutted the sidewalk in blue jeans and a grey shirt with a pink kiss on the front, a silver necklace fell on her neck perfectly, and a bracelet on her left hand and her pink star sapphire ring was left in her pocket. Her pink flats tapped the ground quietly as she made her way in to a Dairy Queen where she got one of their 5$ box lunch. Once she was done she ordered a drink and decided to walk around metropolis for the rest of the time she had. As she walked she looked at all the people and noticed how each of them acted and she was glad that most of them seemed happy. The girl picked up a few pennies here and their to add to her collection of pennies and even talked to people. Though as she waited for the light on the street to turn to walk a young kid on a skate board zoomed in front of her, a bus honked its horn and the girl dashed out and pushed the kid. That caused the boy on the skateboard to move faster and get out of the way, yet it didn't leave time for the girl to move. outfit

Shane was lucky to look over at the exact right time, as a kid on a skateboard zoomed by, headphones in and oblivious to the world around him. He dodged people, knocking some over in his carelessness. Some shouted and cursed at him, and others simply rolled their eyes. Shane kept his gaze on the kid, knowing almost instinctively that something bad was going to happen. Then, just as predicted, the kid completely ignored the no walk light on the next corner, the one on Shane's right. A bus was heading straight for the light, too, at around forty five miles an hour. The hero saw the inevitable about to happen two seconds before the skateboarder even dropped off the curb. With a gasp on his lips Shane was on the move, slapping on his domino mask and pushing himself off of the ground in flight. The possibilities of what might happen in the next few seconds flashed through his head. The scenarios in which anyone died were immediately eliminated. He could grab the kid and throw up a force field, but that bus was six tons, plus of force constantly pressing on that field, and it would shatter very quickly though the bus would experience a violent speed drop. Then there were only two ways left to-
Suddenly, a young woman who had been standing waiting for the crossing light stepped forward and shoved the skateboarder, and the added speed boost propelled him safely to the other curb. Now, it was the woman who was in harm's way, and she was not going to get out of the way in time by herself. Shane had to improvise, his mind going into overdrive as his adrenaline kicked up a notch. Landing just behind the beauty, mere moments before the bus's impact, he threw up his force field. There was a massive impact as the public transport liner slammed into the grayish haze, and though it broke through as expected it gave Ragnarok an extra half second to scoop up the little lady and reverse directions, landing them both on the opposite curb. Shane's heart was beating a million miles an hour as he set her down. "A-are you okay, Miss?" He asked, panting. "That was a very brave thing to do back there, but you could have died..."

Everything happened so fast. She was sure she was going to be bus food, but the life of a child was worth it. Though the pain never came the girl opened her eyes to find that she was safely on the other side of the street being set down by a man. Looking at him she could tell his heart was pounding, hers was beating fast as well. As he asked her if she was ok Rueben nodded. "I believe I am fine. Thank you for saving me." The girl hugged the man lightly. After all he did save her life. Pulling away she looked at him, her innocent adorable brown eyes sparkled.
"Brave has nothing to do with the love someone feels for something else. Saving people is something I love to do." The girl smiled, her love for the things she did was powerful, no mater what she was wearing. She didnt really care if people knew that she was a star sapphire and that she was Rueben Hicca super model. "Are you ok?" The girl asked. "Let me get you a drink?" The last sentence was more of a question then a statement, mostly because she was unsure if that was the social normal thing to do if someone saved your life.

Whoever this little lady was, Shane took an immediate liking to her, and appreciated her kindhearted innocence. "You're very welcome." Though normally Shane did add a little bit more onto the end of that, he felt in this situation that he better not. Talking any more about how it was his pleasure and that he would be there to help her anytime, yada yada would be bragging, and that would more likely than not immediately start building enmity between them. The last thing Shane wanted to do was lose a friend like her. Even Alpha agreed on that, a rarity. His heart warmed with her hug, and gently he returned it, taking great care not to make it too close and personal. Sort of like how he would hug a niece, if he had one. What she said after that, her answer to his assertation about putting her life on the line, totally surprised him. It seemed that she understood the concept of love so much better than he did, and she couldn't be a day over eighteen. Unless she was somehow older, and didn't look it, or aged in reverse like Benjamin Button... something odd like that. Then he attached the phrase "Saving people is something I love to do", and Shane had to stop his thought processes. "Hold on, so you do this kind of thing frequently? Or do you mean like, evangelism save, or work in a soup kitchen save...?" The three ways 'save' was often used in the modern world instantly rolled off the tongue, as he refused to believe at first that she had just revealed to him that she was a superhero. Her smile warmed his heart even more. "I'm peachy. A bit shaken up, but peachy." Now Shane's heart rate was almost back to normal. "As much as I'd like to go grab something with you, I really can't. Walking around in this mask is a magnet for admirers, and they'd recognize me despite the fact I'm not wearing my uniform." Sticking out one black dress shoe-clad foot, Shane gestured to his civvies.

This made the girl nodd "Yes save, like green lantern save." The girl smiled brightly, "Though my color is more of a pink color." She did however think that working in soup kitchens were great and all and she would be working in one a few weeks from now when she wasnt working of a photo shoot for her work. She was however glad that the man himself was ok, after all she didnt want anyone getting to much hurt. Even if what had just happen might have cost her her life.
As he did point to his mask and his civvies she hit her head with her hand and smiled. "Silly me. I forgot some heroes have secret identities. Well perhaps we will meet again one day." Soon people were starting to gather around. "Well my hero you might want to take to the streets before the humans start to notice more." She smiled, "Unless I can take you somewhere? I'm really good at transporting people." Rueben smiled at the man but before anything could happen the child ran up to the two and looked at them. "I'm soo sorry. I really didn't mean for anyone to get hurt." Rue bent down to the boy and ruffled his hair. "Its alright kiddo, Just be more careful when you play with your scooter, im sure your mum and dad would terribly miss you if anything happened." The boy nodded and looked up at the man. "Thank you for saving this lady."

"Really? I've never heard of a purple lantern before. I wasn't even aware that there were any other colors than green." Lanterns had the coolest abilities, at least in Shane's eyes; they were able to construct tangible objects using some form of kinetic energy. There was a whole corps of them, apparently meant to defend not just Earth, but the whole galaxy, teeming with life. Recruits from every planet were trained and sent back to their home. Hal Jordan and John Stewart were two of Earth's, along with another that was rogue. Shane had met the former two, and they were both nice guys. Was the only difference between their powers and this young lady's the color? Were the two organizations affiliated? Were there any other colors? Shane was full of questions, but he kept his lip bitten. She facepalmed, and it made him chuckle. "It's quite alright. It looks like you have one too, If I hadn't saved you, it would still be a secret." They were soon surrounded by a small crowd who had either seen what happened, or recognized Ragnarok's face. "Well, can't just walk away now without getting mobbed. But I can fly. Probably not as fast as you can, but it serves its purpose." After a moment's hesitation, he decided to go back on what he had said earlier. "You know what, while we're here, we might as well go grab something together. Something light, since I just ate. Jamba Juice sound good? On me."
The kid came back to apologize, which made Shane grateful. Many kids these days wouldn't have done it. His apology meant a lot more to the hero than just an act of thankfulness. "You're welcome. I'm sure that she would be terribly missed, too, if she had died saving you." He looked up at Rueben and gave her a small smile.
